The 10-Minute Home Safety Sweep Every DFW Family Should Do This Weekend
When was the last time you walked through your own home looking for trouble, on purpose?
At Safety Bros, we do home preparedness assessments all over DFW, and the same gaps show up in house after house. The good news: most of them take minutes to fix once you know where to look.
This weekend, set a timer for 10 minutes and walk your home with fresh eyes. Here's what to check:
1. Test every smoke alarm. Press the test button on each one. If you can't remember the last time the batteries were changed, change them now. A smoke alarm with a dead battery is just a decoration.
2. Find your fire extinguisher. Do you have one in the kitchen? Is the gauge needle in the green? Could everyone in the house old enough to use it actually find it in the dark?
3. Walk the two ways out. Every bedroom needs two ways out, usually the door and a window. Go stand in each bedroom and confirm both. If a window is painted shut or blocked by furniture, that's a fix for today.
4. Name your meeting spot. If your family had to get out fast tonight, where does everyone meet? The mailbox, the neighbor's driveway, the big oak out front, it doesn't matter what it is. If your family can't answer in three seconds, pick one today and tell everyone.
5. Locate the shutoffs. Water shutoff valve, breaker box, gas shutoff. Can every adult in the house find them without hunting? Label them with a piece of tape and a marker.
6. Post emergency contacts. Not just in your phone, on paper, where a babysitter or grandparent can find them. Poison control, pediatrician, a trusted neighbor, and your out-of-town contact.
Ten minutes. That's the whole sweep.
And if any of those checks turned up a question you couldn't answer, that's exactly the kind of gap we help families work through. At Safety Bros, we walk homes with families across DFW and build simple, practical plans around real life, not fear.
Prepared today. Protected tomorrow.
